JOB SUMMARY: Provide nursing/health related services to the students and school
community at assigned school(s)
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned):
• Respond to student health issues at assigned school(s).
• Implement health service program for the assigned school(s).
• Serve as a resource and consultant to the school staff, students and families
on health-related issues.
• Assist RN school nurse to implement health care plans for specific individual students
including Electronic Health Care Plans (EHCP).
• Maintain and update knowledge and understanding of WVBOE Policy 2422.7
Standards of Basic and Specialized Health Care Procedures and the Health Care
Procedures Manual.
• Participate in establishing procedures for emergency care of student injuries/illnesses.
• Develop and implement procedures and programs for the prevention and control of
communicable diseases.
• Assist in the investigation of communicable diseases.
• Promote the effective sharing of information among the community health professionals
the schools and the Hancock County Health Department.
• Review and update student health records always following HIPPA and FERPA
• Attend and participate in faculty, staff and community meetings as a representative
of the school wellness committee.
• Participate in the school’s multi-disciplinary team evaluation process.
• Participate as the health professional in IEP and 504 meetings.
• Serve as the liaison between the school, student, parents and health care providers.
• Collaborate with principals, school- based health center staff, and school personnel to
assess, plan and maintain a healthy school environment.
• Coordinate and implement the school’s health screening program and follow-up activities.
• Monitor compliance with state immunization laws.
• Assist in the development of health care plans for special needs students.
• Assist and provide health care class instruction.- Maintain ongoing contact with school principal(s), teachers, aides, secretaries,
cooks and custodians regarding health-related issues.
• Identify and prioritize students who need individual health care plans.
• Administer first aid and emergency care by responding immediately.
• Monitor medication administration at the schools.
• Perform medication audits of schools’ medication logs.
• Ensure the delivery of school health services at assigned schools.
• Maintain confidential information in compliance with state nursing procedures,
Hancock County Schools’ procedures and the WV Department of Education’s
procedures for the Collection, Maintenance, and Disclosure of School
Records, and federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
• Maintain expertise by participating in relevant professional development.
• Coordinate referrals for various health problems to appropriate community
resources and keep appropriate school staff apprised of the referral status. - Assist with health-related attendance problems.
• Complete annual state reports.
• Monitor and maintain the Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) in all locations.
• Other duties as may be assigned. - Participates in Hancock County Schools required Staff/Curriculum Development
- Maintains professional appearance.
- Some LPN positions require the LPN to ride the bus with the student.
- Is punctual and minimizes absences.
Qualifications: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a person who has met all the requirements for licensure as a practical nurse and who engages in practical nursing under the direction of a Registered Professional Nurse as defined in W. Va. Code §30-7A-1 et seq. The LPN who is employed in a public school shall function under the supervision, assignment and/or delegation of the certified school nurse to perform
nursing services (W. Va. Code §18A-4-8).
Has a current and unencumbered LPN license in the state of WV - BLS Certified

Physical Demands: The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While
performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach,
stand, write, talk, hear, see, and use technology such as computers and multimedia equipment, use repetitive motions and move as a fast gait. While performing the
duties of this job, the employee may lift and/or move at least 50 pounds and assist
with lifting up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities require by this job include close
vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The
position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and to interact with the public and other staff members.
Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate.
Exceptions include the gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where
the noise levels may be moderate to loud.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated twice a year for employees with a continuing contract and three times a year for employees with a probationary contract. This is in accordance with provisions of the Hancock County Board of Education Policy on Evaluation of Service Personnel.
