Health Assistant Job Description - 155 work days during school year, 7.5 hrs per day
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
 
The Health Assistant candidate must complete the standard school employment procedures and
have a successful interview prior to employment.
EDUCATION:
1. High School diploma or equivalent
2. First aid trained and certified.
3. CPR certified.
4. Medical assisting or CNA experience preferred.
5. License to drive and have own auto available with insurance coverage provided by
the school district if the Health Assistant is expected to transport students.
6. The Health Assistant should be willing to attend continuing education conferences,
courses, training sessions, etc., as provided by the school district and/or outside
professionals.
PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:
1. The Health Assistant must be dependable and adaptable.
1. Understand and follow school policies and assume health room responsibilities as
assigned.
1. Ability to notify District Nurse to interpret health history information, medical reports,
observations and test results.

1. Capable of adjusting to various school assignments and situations.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
HEALTH ROOM RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Administer first aid to the sick and injured.
1. Administer medications and record in health room log.
1. Contact parent or designated person of illness or injury to student in accordance with
health room policy and prepare student to go home.
1. Confer with school personnel regarding absences for health reasons.
1. Follow-up on student progress and inform school personnel regarding health concerns.
1. Perform various screening procedures (i.e. vision, hearing, pediculosis, etc.).
1. Retest students failing screening tests and refer as needed.
1. Utilize student information system via computer to manage health information.
2. Assist with illness tracking among students and their family to maintain a healthy
learning environment for all students.
HEALTH ROOM MANAGEMENT:
1. Keep health room sanitary, attractive and orderly.
1. Assist in ordering and maintaining health room inventory in accordance to state and
federal law.
1. Maintain all immunization records and enforce regulations in accordance to Colorado
state law with help from District Nurse Consultant and administration.
1. Maintain all health information sheets and update information as needed.

1. Record health room visits, students symptoms and disposition.
1. Observe students for other health needs as they arrive in the health room and refer as
necessary.
1. Assist with kindergarten round-up (i.e. testing, gathering health information, talking with
parents, etc.).
1. Prepare health room for opening and closing of year.
CLERICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. File and maintain all health records in a confidential manner.
1. Prepare correspondence to parents and other agencies regarding student health needs.
1. Receive and relay health information and initiate telephone contacts as needed.
1. Prepare schedules for various screenings and coordinate volunteers as needed.
1. Prepare lists of students with significant health problems for use by school personnel.
1. Prepare health records and information to be sent to other schools as requested.
1. Prepare health packets for all students’ registrations throughout the year.
1. Prepare emergency and scheduled medications to be taken on field trips.
OTHER DUTIES:
1. Assist other school personnel in defining health concerns for individual students with
special needs.
1. Assist students with special needs, handicaps, limitations, etc.
1. Assist District Nurse Consultant and school personnel with specific health education
classes, training sessions, etc. 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
A nine-month year.  Salary is established by the Board of Education.
 
EVALUATION:
 
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on
Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.  The evaluation will be conducted by April 30.

POSITION TITLE:                Teacher Assistant – Special Education
 
REPORTS TO:                      Building Principal / Site Administrator
 
FLSA STATUS:                     Non-Exempt
 
WORK YEAR:                      157 Days / 9 month / 4 days

Minimum Salary:  $17.75 per hour, depending on experience
 
POSITION SUMMARY: 
Assists regular and/or special education teachers in providing educational opportunity for students and maintains a safe and comfortable environment conducive to learning. Reinforces curriculum, activities, and/or skills with small groups of students or one-on-one and collaborates with teachers to implement lesson plans and/or to determine appropriate modifications and/or accommodations for individual students. Supervises students in various school locations and activities. Supervises student behavior and safety and implements discipline and emergency procedures as needed.  May assist teachers with clerical and organizational duties.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Reinforce curriculum, activities, and skills with small groups of students or one-on-one by tutoring, instructing, demonstrating/modeling, explaining assignments, creating opportunities For cognitive and motor development, administering tests, utilizing adaptive learning and communications equipment, and/or adapting assignments to student capabilities.
2. Supervises student behavior and safety in classrooms, lunchrooms, playgrounds, on field trips, in crosswalks, getting on/off the bus, and/or between classes.  Implements appropriate discipline and emergency procedures as needed.
3. Assist with students’ health and hygiene needs as required, may include administering basic first aid, diapering, toileting, dressing, and/or feeding.  Encourage good hygiene habits and encourage students to be self-sufficient in these areas, as appropriate.
4. Assists teacher with clerical and/or organizational duties, including grading assignments, Making copies, laminating, completing paperwork, word processing, assembling bulletin boards and teaching tools, organizing classroom supplies and activity centers, and/or cleaning and paly areas.
5. Attends staff, team, and/or IEP meetings and in service activities as appropriate.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of child development, behavioral management, and age-appropriate
instructional techniques preferred.
2. Demonstrate initiative.
3. Ability to communicate, coordinate, instruct and use interpersonal skills. Frequently required. To analyze, evaluate, and negotiate. Occasionally required to copy, compute, compile, and synthesize. 
4. Proficient reading, writing, and math skills.
5. Ability and willingness to work with children from diverse backgrounds and with various abilities and challenges.
6. Operating knowledge of various adaptive equipment (e.g., electronic wheelchair, dynavox, braces, lefts, etc.) also may be required within one month after hire.
7. Ability to follow special education teacher instructions, lesson plans, and policies and procedures to appropriately reinforce and/or adapt curriculum and environmental situations; To discipline students; to manage behavior; and to ensure safety, comfort, and health of students. 
 
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School Diploma or GED.
2. Must meet “Highly Qualified” provisions as defined by state and/or federal legislation.
3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administrators may find appropriate and acceptable.
4. Experience working with children preferred.
 
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear; taste or smell; walk, stand, bend, and sit; lift or move 10 to 50 pounds. The employee may occasionally assist with the transfer of students or equipment that is weight bearing with proper training.  Specific vision abilities required by this job may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.  May have high exposure to hernia and/or repetitive motion/stress due to lifting students and/or moving students with adaptive equipment.  Moderate to high exposure to self to disease due to working with sick or injured students and/or handling body fluids.  Low to medium exposure to self to bruises and cuts due to typical classroom accidents, emotionally charged students, and/or operating and moving adaptive equipment (e.g., wheelchairs).  Low to high exposure to students to bruises, cuts, fractured bones, and/or disease if a person in this position fails to maintain a safe learning environment, provide adequate supervision, respond quickly to hazardous situations, and/or follow medical/health protocols.
