  •   Health Assistant Job Description - 155 work days during school year, 7.5 hrs per day
    GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
     
    The Health Assistant candidate must complete the standard school employment procedures and
    have a successful interview prior to employment.
    EDUCATION:
    1. High School diploma or equivalent
    2. First aid trained and certified.
    3. CPR certified.
    4. Medical assisting or CNA experience preferred.
    5. License to drive and have own auto available with insurance coverage provided by
    the school district if the Health Assistant is expected to transport students.
    6. The Health Assistant should be willing to attend continuing education conferences,
    courses, training sessions, etc., as provided by the school district and/or outside
    professionals.
    PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:
    1. The Health Assistant must be dependable and adaptable.
    1. Understand and follow school policies and assume health room responsibilities as
    assigned.
    1. Ability to notify District Nurse to interpret health history information, medical reports,
    observations and test results.
    1. Able to determine the importance of health information as it would affect learning
    abilities.
    1. Work independently and learn procedures quickly.
    1. Able to work within the confines of state and school guidelines.
    1. Capable of adjusting to various school assignments and situations.
    INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
    1. Have a genuine liking for children of all ages and the ability to work with them.
    1. Establish rapport with students, parents, and school personnel to meet student health
    needs.
    1. Use discretion and respect confidentiality of information entrusted.

    1. Able to communicate clearly (i.e. personal contacts, phone calls, and correspondence
    between families and school).
    EMERGENCY EFFECTIVENESS:
    1. Exercise good judgment when unexpected problems arise.
    1. Able to determine when additional assistance is necessary.
    1. Know and follow emergency reporting procedures.
    GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
     
    HEALTH ROOM RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Administer first aid to the sick and injured.
    1. Administer medications and record in health room log.
    1. Contact parent or designated person of illness or injury to student in accordance with
    health room policy and prepare student to go home.
    1. Confer with school personnel regarding absences for health reasons.
    1. Follow-up on student progress and inform school personnel regarding health concerns.
    1. Perform various screening procedures (i.e. vision, hearing, pediculosis, etc.).
    1. Retest students failing screening tests and refer as needed.
    1. Utilize student information system via computer to manage health information.
    2. Assist with illness tracking among students and their family to maintain a healthy
    learning environment for all students.
    HEALTH ROOM MANAGEMENT:
    1. Keep health room sanitary, attractive and orderly.
    1. Assist in ordering and maintaining health room inventory in accordance to state and
    federal law.
    1. Maintain all immunization records and enforce regulations in accordance to Colorado
    state law with help from District Nurse Consultant and administration.
    1. Maintain all health information sheets and update information as needed.

    1. Record health room visits, students symptoms and disposition.
    1. Observe students for other health needs as they arrive in the health room and refer as
    necessary.
    1. Assist with kindergarten round-up (i.e. testing, gathering health information, talking with
    parents, etc.).
    1. Prepare health room for opening and closing of year.
    CLERICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. File and maintain all health records in a confidential manner.
    1. Prepare correspondence to parents and other agencies regarding student health needs.
    1. Receive and relay health information and initiate telephone contacts as needed.
    1. Prepare schedules for various screenings and coordinate volunteers as needed.
    1. Prepare lists of students with significant health problems for use by school personnel.
    1. Prepare health records and information to be sent to other schools as requested.
    1. Prepare health packets for all students’ registrations throughout the year.
    1. Prepare emergency and scheduled medications to be taken on field trips.
    OTHER DUTIES:
    1. Assist other school personnel in defining health concerns for individual students with
    special needs.
    1. Assist students with special needs, handicaps, limitations, etc.
    1. Assist District Nurse Consultant and school personnel with specific health education
    classes, training sessions, etc. 
    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    A nine-month year.  Salary is established by the Board of Education.
     
    EVALUATION:
     
    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on
    Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.  The evaluation will be conducted by April 30.
