Position: Public School Nurse LPN (Posting number 2425-3131)
Location: State Road Elementary School

Position Summary:
The Public School LPN performs a variety of duties necessary for the efficient operation of a school’s health services under the direction of the assigned building’s School RN and the district Nurse Coordinator. Health Services mandated by NYS Education Law, Article 19 include administration of health screening tests (vision, hearing, scoliosis, and school physicals), maintenance of cumulative health records and administration of emergency care programs for ill or injured pupils. Immunizations screenings, medication administration and documentation, and completing state immunizations survey is included as part of the health services. The School LPN performs her/his duties in a manner consistent with professional standards, the New York State Nurse Practice Act, and other federal, state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing practice as set forth by the New York State Health and Education Departments. The School LPN adheres to school district policies, regulations and practices. She/he acts as a healthcare consultant, advocate, manager and educator to provide optimal school nursing care to the school community.
Supervisor:
The Public School LPN reports directly to the district Nurse Coordinator and the assigned building’s School RN and Principal.
Qualifications:
- Holds a current license and registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse granted by New York State Education Department.
- Holds current certification in CPR-AED for Healthcare Professionals (adult and child).
- Demonstrates broad knowledge in the use of health related issues in young adults. Practices within the framework of casefinding, health teaching, health counseling and provision of supportive and restorative care, under the direction of the Nurse Coordinator. Refers to the RN for matters outside the LPN scope of practice.
- Demonstrates proficiency in computer skills including but not limited to electronic medical records, email use, word processing and spreadsheet use and development in Microsoft and Google formats.
- Communicates and works well with students, teachers, parents, administrators and others in the community.
- Physical Condition commensurate with the demands of the position including but not limited to:
- Sitting at a desk and typing
- Pushing a wheelchair
- Lifting students/supplies up to 50 pounds
- Running or quickly walking to emergencies throughout the buildings and/or outside grounds
Essential Responsibilities:
Patient Care - Successfully carries out the medical orders and procedures prescribed by the healthcare provider as well as individual Health Plans written by the RN. Clarifies questions related to those orders as they arise.
- Promotes safety and protects the optimal health status of children.
- Evaluates student injury/illness concerns and documents such events.
- Follows established system for medication administration and documentation. Evaluates response to medication and alerts parents/healthcare provider as appropriate.
- Prepares medication for off-site field trips per district protocol.
- Provides health screening;
- Screens students for deficits in vision & hearing, per NYSED requirements and schedules scoliosis screening by RN.
- Makes referrals if student fails established criteria.
- Assists students to become more independent in the management of their conditions to maintain or improve their health.
- Provides emergency first aid care to students and staff
Clerical - Maintains the integrity and security of health information, both manual and electronic.
- Creates and maintains reports as directed utilizing manual methods as well as computer software programs.
- Maintain health office supplies & order annually per Nurse Coordinator instructions.
- Monitors immunization compliance, early detection, surveillance, reporting and follow-up of contagious diseases.
- Completes state records as directed or required.
Communication - Consults with the building School RN, Nurse Coordinator, physician, parents, and staff to evaluate the effectiveness of care.
- Informs staff of confidentiality of health information and universal precautions.
Planning - Assists in responsibility for proper disposal of regulated medical waste within the building.
- Assists in developing building protocol for Emergency Evacuation to include Radiation (Potassium Iodide), fire and bomb emergency protocols, as they relate to health office responsibilities.
- Assists in conducting daily/monthly check of equipment & emergency medication per building protocol.
Professional Development - Attends building and district meetings, as requested by the Nurse Coordinator and assigned building’s School RN or Principal.
- Compensation at the individual nurse’s hourly rate will be paid if outside the normal work day.
Employment - Ten month position, plus summer hours as student health planning requires.
- Individual’s hourly rate of pay for summer hours scheduled through assigned building’s School RN and Nurse Coordinator to prepare health office for new school year.
Performs such other position-related duties assigned by the nurse coordinator or other designated administrator during unusual or emergency situations.
Salary: As per current Educational Support Association Agreement (ESA) as well as education and experience.
