Salary: | $38.00 per hour |
Note: Positions are contingent upon student enrollment and School Board approval.
High School Summer School will be held at Lakeland High School and is designed to provide opportunities for students to complete a new course or repeat a course previously taken. The proposed summer school program is free to Suffolk Public Schools students and contingent on student registration/enrollment. Students will be in a hybrid format. Virtual classes will be held for English 12, Government, and Economics and Personal Finance.
Each high school will be responsible for hiring their own staff and tracking their own students. In most cases, teachers will be assigned students from the school in which they applied, however, this may not always be the case.
The Summer School program will be held from Monday, June 30, 2025 through Thursday, July 31, 2025, (19 instructional days). Instructional days will not occur on Fridays or July 3, 2025.
Courses will be scheduled as follows:
Repeat Courses:
Morning Session 7:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Afternoon Session 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
New Courses
All Day 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Break - 11:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Graduation Ceremony will be held at Lakeland High School on July 30, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.
Essential Functions
Collaborates with general education teachers to ensure that student accommodations are provided as indicated in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for students with disabilities that are attending the Summer School program.
Provides Extended School Year Services (ESY) to eligible students as indicated in the Individualized Education Plan
Ensures that specialized instruction is planned for and provided to the student as indicated in the IEP.
Collects and maintains data related to the identified goals and objectives within the IEP.
Reports IEP progress two times during the duration of the ESY summer services (once at midpoint and once at the conclusion of the services.)
Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
Ensure that students’ conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Summer School Administrator, Principal, and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent, to include the monitoring of students during a working lunch.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as the provision of specially designed instruction for students with disabilities.
Knowledge of the Virginia Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities, as well as, Special Education division Policies and Procedures.
Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
Ability to organize and coordinate work.
Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
