    All positions with Santa Fe Public Schools require a post offer/pre-employment background check. Some positions have additional requirements as established by Federal or State Rules and Regulations.
     
    General Function:
    Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an educational program for middle and high school students that supports student preparation for college through an academic elective course that teaches necessary learning skills, reinforces the academic core, and encourages the selection of rigorous student courses.
     
    Under direct supervision of the principal and AVID coordinator and with the assistance of the AVID elective teacher, tutors guide students toward academic and personal excellence that will reach far beyond their secondary school years. AVID tutors are active participants in the learning, growth and personal development of students with the goal of preparing students to successfully attend college.
     
    Education/Training/Experience
    (Basic minimum requirements are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the district.)
    Minimum:  Bachelor’s degree or evidence of earned college credit in the field of education; or enrollment in a science, math, or liberal arts bachelor’s program; or currently enrolled AVID student over the age of 18. Must be available for 16 hours of paid facilitator training.
    Preferred: Previous student tutoring or mentoring experience, community-based academic support program; strong math background.
     
    Knowledge/Skills and Abilities: 
    Passionate belief in the ability of all students to graduate college-ready; former AVID program participation or experience working with a school; excellent writing skills; Ability to work well with middle and high school students; culturally competent, meaning they deal easily with multiple ethnic groups; strong organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; demonstrated responsibility and reliability.
     
    Essential Job Functions
    All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures.  Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential functions include the following:
     
    1. Take an active role in developing the academic and personal strengths of AVID students. 
    2. Serve as a role model/mentor to AVID students by being a lifelong learner, demonstrating appropriate academic and social behaviors, and always wearing appropriate attire.
    3. Determine from student’s notes and discussions, the concepts that need to be taught or retaught.
    4. Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class, and textbook notes, etc.
    5. Become familiar with the materials in the AVID Curriculum Libraries.
    6. Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students.
    7. Conduct tutorial sessions in all content areas, including mathematics.
    8. Conduct mini lessons in the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation.
    9. Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
    10. Work with students in any phase of the writing process, such as brainstorming, clustering, revision, and editing.
    11. Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
    12. Other related duties as assigned.
     
    Salary Range:
    Based on education
    $16.30-$21.73 hourly
     
    Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to): 
    Pen or Pencil to take notes; resource materials such as textbooks are available at sites.
     
    Physical/Cognitive Requirements: 
    Required to stand; move throughout the room and/or facility; communicate verbally and electronically; use.
    hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.  May have to
    stoop, kneel, sit, climb. May have occasion to perform light lifting, but not more than 25 pounds.
     
    Environmental Conditions: 
    Work is performed in a classroom or library. Travel to different school sites may be required so exposure.

    Personal Accountability:
    1. Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality.
    2. Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
    3. Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
    4. Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
    5. Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment including its capabilities, limitations, and appropriate/special application.
    6. Protects the District’s resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
    7. Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
