PRINCIPAL
Position Title: Principal
Reports to: Superintendent

Valid and properly registered Professional Educator License and applicable endorsement, issued by the Illinois State Educator Preparation and Licensure Board, qualifying him or her to act as Principal in the district
Evidence of physical fitness and freedom from communicable disease
Successful completion of criminal background check

Responsibilities and Duties:
The Principal’s primary responsibility is the improvement of instruction.
A majority of the time spent by the Principal shall be focused on curriculum and staff development through both formal and informal activities.
Establish clear lines of communication regarding school goals, accomplishments, practices and policies with parents and teachers.
Supervise the operation of assigned attendance center.
Assume administrative responsibilities and instructional leadership under the supervision of the Superintendent for the planning, operation, and evaluation of the educational program of assigned attendance area.
Utilize resources of proper law enforcement agencies when the safety and welfare of students and teachers are threatened by illegal use of drugs and alcohol, by illegal use or possession of weapons, or by illegal gang activity.
Implement the District’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
Plan a program of study that improves instruction and meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
Adequately prepare for daily leadership of building needs.
Report suspected child abuse/neglect cases as required by statute and board policy and notify immediately appropriate personnel of evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic steroids.
Work cooperatively with other school personnel in the identification, diagnosis, referral and remediation of individual students with specialized needs.
Meet with students, parents, other administrators, and/or consultants as necessary to meet district mission and building vision.
Communicate with parents regularly and document processes used to engage parents in the educational program.
Maintain accurate, complete, and correct registers, records and reports as required by law, board policy, or building procedures.
Build a shared vision of high expectations leading to college and career readiness.
Hold staff accountable for progress towards stated goals and work to build capacity with staff members.
Conduct difficult conversations in order to improve student results.
Develop, implement, and monitor outcomes of a School Improvement Plan.
Comprehensively assess all aspects of school performance through an annual data report.
Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment.
Manage budgetary allotments as provided by District Office, making budgetary decisions at the building level that reflect overall school priorities.
Prioritize use of school time to maximize instructional time in order to achieve school goals.
Employ current and developing technologies and promote their use.
Implement a defined curricular scope and sequence.
Consistently review and assess instructional practices of all teachers in the building.
Model and implement a data-driven decision-making structure.
Disaggregate data to determine how school is performing at serving those students traditionally under-served.
Select, assign, and retain effective teachers.
Frequently observe staff, provide consistent feedback, and evaluate staff consistent with the School Code and applicable collective bargaining agreement(s).
Develop a team of instructional leaders to build capacity of all teachers.
Implement and lead a Professional Learning Community.
Acknowledge and respond to all communication within 24 hours.
Follow appropriate protocols as directed by supervisor for time off requests or time away from building and/or department.
Build ongoing relationships with students, staff, parents, community, and potential business partners.
Include multiple voices and perspectives in the decision-making process.
Engage families in the educational program, including hosting a Parental Advisory Council.
Demonstrate an understanding of the change process and use leadership and facilitation skills to manage it effectively.

Supervise and lead (or ensures that the event is supervised or led) appropriate after-school activities including, but not limited to:
Parent nights
Parent Teacher Conferences

Athletic Events (except for elementary level)
Make referrals to appropriate health and human service agencies.
Establish the master schedule for instructional programs, ensuring sequential learning experiences for students that meet and exceed state standards.
Attends conferences and serves as representative on various Athletic Boards (high school principal).
Manages grants, as assigned (elementary principal).
Encourage each professional staff member to develop a Professional Improvement Plan.
Recommend to the Superintendent the appointment, renewal, dismissal, withholding of increment, promotion, assignment or other actions for all personnel assigned to the school, following established procedures and timelines.
Recommend to the Superintendent personnel to fill all vacant positions in the school, following district affirmative action, recruitment and selection procedures.
Provide opportunities for effective staff development that address the needs of the instructional program and needs of the staff, including workshops, conferences, visitations, and sessions in which the staff shares successful practices and strategies.
Regularly inspect all facilities to ensure compliance with all applicable codes and regulations including access for individuals with handicapping conditions.
Assume responsibility for the health, safety, and welfare of students, personnel, and visitors. Develop clearly understood procedures and provide regular drills for emergencies and disasters, following State, local, and district guidelines.
Organize and maintain a public relations system for the school that consistently celebrates and informs parents and the community of the accomplishments of students and staff. The information provided should solicit community and parental support and understanding of the programs and services of the school.
Supervise the production of all school publications.
Maintain and account for all student activity funds and money collected from students in accordance with board policy and auditing recommendations. Correct any audit exceptions immediately.
Communicate with the Superintendent regularly about the needs, successes, and general operation of the school – including, but not limited to monthly one-on-one meetings.
Hold regular staff meetings and serve, as appropriate, on staff committees.
Represent the school and district at community, State, and professional meetings.
Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties in accordance with the law and Board policies.
Be knowledgeable of and adhere to contractual obligations and the law and regulations, including but not limited to, the Illinois School Code, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Education policies and regulations, school regulations and procedures.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties:
Support the District’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
Prompt arrival and full effort throughout the duration of every shift.
Report suspected child abuse/neglect cases as required by statute and District policy.
Work cooperatively with other school personnel.
Meet, as required, with students, parents, administrator and/or consultants in order to better job performance.
Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, School Board policy and District procedures.
Maintain student discipline with a focus on student safety in accordance with School Board policy.
Ensure that the highest standards of safety and sanitation are followed in the kitchen throughout the day.
Inspect all food deliveries being made, check for quality and accuracy, and sign the invoices only after being inspected. Report same to the Food Service Director.
Ensure all food and supplies are stored properly and rotated using the First In, First Out (FIFO) standard.
Determine the quantities of food to be prepared for the day so that all students receive the proper amounts and there are minimal leftovers.
Order, prepare, and serve all food items as indicated on the monthly menu.
Prepare food according to the planned menu and test uniformity of recipes.
Determine if the finished product is of the best quality in both flavor and appearance before it is served.
Supervise and operate various kitchen equipment; train others in the safe operation of equipment.
Ensure that the preparation, serving, and storing of all food items meet the quality and sanitation standards set by the District.
Ensure that all portion sizes served to students and staff are correct and in full compliance with all state and Federal guidelines.
Ensure that all serving stations are fully stocked with food prior to each serving period in sufficient quantities and that the food is presented in an appetizing way.
Maintain correct holding temperatures of food in accordance with applicable law.
Ensure that all leftovers are properly stored or disposed of.
Ensure that meal counts are taken at the point of service, following all state and Federal regulations, and are taken accurately.
Ensure that all required recordkeeping is completed in an organized, timely and accurate manner.
Collect, count, store and record all monies for student and adult payments for meals in accordance with District procedure.
Delegate job duties to appropriate staff to ensure smooth work flow and completion of all tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
Supervise and instruct staff on the proper and safe handling of all kitchen equipment.
Communicate with staff new procedures, policies, expectations, etc.
Report any problems or accidents occurring in the kitchen or the cafeteria to the Principal and the Food Service Office.
Supervise the locking of all storage areas and the security of kitchen equipment.
Alert the Food Service Office of needed equipment repairs, maintenance, or new equipment needs.
Receive, respond to and report complaints about food or service in accordance with District procedure.
Display the highest ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
Serve as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming, and an effective work ethic.
