NATURE OF WORK:

SALARY:   Grade 51B – Minimum $15.00 / Hour

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
 
• High school diploma or GED required
• Must have at least six months of driving experience as a licensed motor vehicle operator
 
REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must posses a valid NC Driver’s License and a good driving record
• Must submit to a preemployment background check
• Must submit to preemployment, as well as random and post-accident, drug testing
• Must possess good moral character
• Must maintain a professional appearance at all times
• Must attend and successfully complete classroom (virtual) and behind the wheel training, conducted by DMV personnel
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be able to obtain an NCDOT medical card (paid for by OCS)
• Must have acceptable vision
• Must have acceptable hearing
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
• Must be able to stand, walk, run, bend, stoop, push, pull, reach, climb, and sit for extended periods of time
• Must be able to enter and exit the bus in a forward-facing movement
• Must be able to exit the bus through the rear emergency door
• Must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff
• Must be able to perform routine cleaning task
• Must be able to complete and update required paperwork in a timely manner
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Transport students to/from school from stops along established routes
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, employees, equipment, and property
• Obey all federal, state, and local laws
• Adhere to all provisions of the Pupil Transportation Regulations of Board of Education and all terms of the School Bus Driver Handbook
• Maintain knowledge of assigned routes and students assigned to bus
• Supervise students and maintain discipline on the bus
• Ensure students stay in seats while bus is in operation
• Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections and report all damage and/or malfunctions to supervisor immediately
• Clean and sanitize interior of the bus regularly
• Clean exterior of bus including windows and light lenses
• Report all traffic violations and accidents promptly
• Report all injuries, illness, and discipline problems to the appropriate immediately or as soon as reasonably possible
• Ensure that no student is left alone on bus without adult supervision at any time
• Ensure all students have departed bus at the end of every route
• Instruct students in rider safety annually and practice emergency exit drills at least twice annually
• Prevent any object to be placed in the bus that would restrict passageways or emergency exits
• Keep all items on the bus secured
• Drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather
• Report personal absences in time for the supervisor to secure a substitute driver
• Attend all required in-service training
• Record mileage, maintain records, and complete reports fully and accurately
• Exercise good judgement in appraising situations
• Exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians, students, and all staff
• Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities
• Operate a two-way radio as a means of communication to supervisor and/or transportation department only
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor

$2500.00 sign-on bonus - $1250.00 paid when CDL permit is in hand with the P and S endorsement and hired as safety assistant ($16.07 / Hour).  $1250.00 and reimbursement of permit and license fees will be paid after driving 90 business days on a permanent route. 
 
$1000.00 bonus per referral.  Bonus paid in two installments following the schedule above.

NATURE OF WORK:
An employee in this class performs semi-skilled duties in the operation, repair and maintenance of the vehicles in the school transportation program. Manuals and computer diagnosing software are provided as resources for new assignments while other tasks are performed based on experience. Minor problems may be resolved; most others are referred to a supervisor. Errors may be quickly revealed or may be located only by involvement of others. Most errors may be easily remedied and not costly. The employee receives limited supervision.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Working knowledge of vehicle operation and maintenance
• Skill to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire replacement, fuel dispensing, washing vehicles, etc.
• Skill in operating various machines in repairing vehicles
• Ability to locate problems
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Working knowledge of computers using windows operating system
 
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Some experience and training with vehicle operation, maintenance and repair is preferred.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Fills fuel tanks on school buses and school-owned vehicles.
2. Lubricates moving parts of vehicle chassis.
3. Checks, adds and replaces brake and steering fluids.
4. Checks, adds and changes engine oil.
5. Installs air and oil filters.
6. Replaces wiper blades and fan belts.
7. Rotates, replaces and repairs tires.
8. Replaces brake linings.
9. Cleans, adjusts and changes spark plugs.
10. Drains and cleans radiators.
11. Inspects exterior and interior of vehicles for defects.
12. Removes minor dents.
13. Paints buses and vehicles with spray equipment.
14. Tests headlight alignment and makes necessary adjustments.
15. Cleans carburetors, ignition systems, and electrical components.
16. Tests and replaces batteries as needed.
17. Checks and repairs doors and lifts.
18. Repairs seat belts.
19. Repairs broken windows.
20.   Performs other duties as specified by the Maintenance Director.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to physically perform minor repairs.
• Ability to lift moderate to heavy weight (40-50 pounds), stand, walk, run, bend, stoop, push, pull, reach, and climb ladders, for extended periods of time.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the county; skill in the safe operation of a school bus; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; ability to assist children using patience and understanding; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, school personnel, and students. Must be able to follow oral and written directions and have the ability to get along well with others.

• Candidate must possess any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires climbing, sitting, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions. Frequent walking and lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment up to 50 pounds. From the front seat of the bus, a safety assistant must be able to exit the bus from the rear floor level emergency exit using the sit and slide method; climb and descend the bus steps three times within 30 seconds. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to other accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.  A field of vision of at least 70   in each eye is required.  The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, road hazards, and atmospheric conditions. Attendance to training sessions and bus driver meetings beyond the normal assigned hours is necessary. Daily contact with students to provide an orderly and safe environment is required. Contact with parents and administrators is required.
 
A successful candidate must be able to climb and descend the bus stairs using only one hand rail or handle. You may not use your hands to lift your legs up or down the stairs. You may not skip or jump over steps and you must be able to turn around at the top of the stairs and exit the bus. You may not exit the bus backwards.
 
EVALUATION:
The immediate supervisor will evaluate performance on ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
 
SALARY: Salary Grade 50
 
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

4. Instructs pupils who ride buses in rider safety annually, and practices emergency exit drills at least twice annually.
5. Adheres to provision of Motor Vehicle Code, Pupil Transportation Regulations of Board of Education and terms of the School Bus Driver Handbook.
6. Checks to rear of inside bus after each run for students left on the bus before leaving the area in which they are driving, placing the empty bus sign in the REAR window.
7. Assists students, as needed, to board and exit the bus, fasten seat belts, harnesses, and car seats.
8. Secure wheelchairs as appropriate and report equipment or wheel chair defects to the supervisor.
9. Cleans and sanitizes the interior of vehicles regularly.
10. Assist the driver with backing the bus and observing the area around the bus.
11. Maintain a working knowledge of the route in order to assist substitute drivers or to assume responsibility of driving in the absence of the regular driver.

18. Shall be seated behind the last occupied seat on the bus in order to observe the students behavior and safety. May be required to get out of the seat to observe or assist a student.
19. Monitors students with special health problems while in bus; receiving written or oral instructions, being aware and alert to any signs of difficulty following prescribed instructions and procedures, administering first aid, and calling for emergency assistance.
20. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, employees, equipment, and property.
21. Files records, as requested.
