    POSITION OPEN:  Paraeducator  -  Campus Monitor

     

    LOCATION:           Berkley High School

     

    HOURS:                30 hours/week

     

    COMPENSATION: Per the Berkley Education Association of Paraeducators (BEAP)
     

     

    POSITION OBJECTIVE: To help provide a safe and educationally sound environment at the BHS Campus (inside building, parking lot, immediate vicinity of the school)
     

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

     
    • High School Diploma required: 2 years college preferred.

    • Prior experience in supervising or working with adolescents preferred.

    • Coursework, workshops, conferences, or seminars related to adolescent behavior and temperament, conflict resolution, active listening, communication skills, problem solving, etc., preferred.

    • Sound physical health, including the ability to walk extensively both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

    • Understanding of student code of conduct and behavioral expectations of students at Berkley High School.

    • Ability to describe effective strategies for supervising high school students.

    • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

    • Strong Interpersonal Skills:

       
      1. Genuine interest in, sensitivity to, and understanding of adolescents.

      2. Ability to establish rapport and maintain appropriate relationships with high school students, staff and community members.

      3. Ability to anticipate, assess and confront negative student behavior thoughtfully and calmly.

      4. Ability to inquire appropriately, to listen carefully and with an open mind, to assess negative situations accurately, and to guide students toward appropriate and positive behavior

      5. Polite, positive disposition and a stable temperament

      6. Strong work ethic:

         
        • Good attendance and promptness

        • Ability to work as a member of a team

        • Positive response to on-going training and learning

        • Serious attention to essential function of the position

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

     
    1. Supervise and assist students in entering the building in a timely fashion before school and after lunch.

    2. Monitor halls during class changes and encourage students to get to class on time.

    3. Monitor halls during class times and ensure all students have passes and are proceeding to their destinations quickly and quietly

    4. Monitor exits during class times and verify that students exiting the building have appropriate passes from administration

    5. Monitor parking lots at designated times of the day, verify that the proper permit is displayed and that students leaving the campus during class hours have a valid pass from the office and are not truant.

    6. Supervise the lunchroom, hallways, parking lots, and recreation areas during the lunch period.

    7. Monitor the lavatories to ensure students are not lingering or smoking at any time.

    8. Supervise the locker rooms or gymnasium areas when required by the administration.

    9. Establish visibility in the building and assist students to observe school rules and regulations during the course of the day.
