JOB DESCRIPTION:
The reading consultant is responsible to the supervisor of reading for instructional methods and curricular content as outlined in the Reading Curriculum Guide or through administrative directives.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Serves as a resource person to the principal in coordinating the total reading/language arts program.
- Develops, revises and updates the reading curriculum.
- Schedules classroom visitations to ascertain the full implementation of the total reading curriculum, to acquire an overview of the total reading program, to meet the request of a teacher, to model teaching techniques, or to observe specific student(s).
- Assists in the recommendation, selection, and implementation of materials.
- Coordinates the remedial, corrective, and developmental programs.
- Initiates and coordinates action research and experimentation
- Provides guidance and assistance to the classroom teachers by introducing and demonstrating new materials, multi-media approaches, and professional literature.
- Participates in and plans professional development programs for teachers and student teachers on request.
- Identifies and diagnoses reading difficulties through administration and interpretation of individual and/or group diagnostic and standardized tests.
- Compiles reports relative to the functions of the reading department.
- Conducts corrective and remedial classes with selected groups of students according to their needs.
- Provides materials, ideas, and suggestions for an enrichment program for the more capable students.
- Assists with interpretation of the reading program to parents and the public.
- Holds conferences with teachers, parents, and other specialists concerning students’ progress.
- Assists with planning self-help programs for parents to reinforce reading skills at home.
- Assists with the selection of and the evaluation of textbooks in the content areas according to readability levels when requested.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience/Requirement: Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor’s Degree.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
Connecticut State Department of Education required - (097) Reading and Language Arts Consultant
