    CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time (8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m)
     

     

    WORK YEAR: 2024-2025 School Year (Position open immediately)

     

    New Horizon Center's goal has always been to provide children with disabilities the opportunity to reach their full potential. Their satisfaction can be observed on the expression of a child's face when they speak their first word or take their first step toward independence. This Non-public therapeutic day school serves students ages 3-22.

     

    Job Overview
    We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Special Education Teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment for students with diverse needs. This role involves developing individualized education plans (IEPs), implementing effective teaching strategies, classroom management of paraprofessionals and collaborating with parents and other educators to support the academic , behavioral and social development of students with disabilities.

     

    Qualifications: The qualified candidate will have a valid Illinois Professional Educator License with an LBSI endorsement. PreK through 21.

     

    Responsibilities: New Horizon Center team members are entrusted with creating a safe and enjoyable environment for students ages 3-22.
    Your responsibilities will include:

     
    • Lifting and Mobility: Ability to lift up to 25 lbs, ensuring the safety and comfort of students under your care.
    • Engaging with Students: Squatting down to student's eye level to facilitate positive interactions and build connections at that level.
    • Maintaining Learning Areas: Bending over to pick up materials and ensuring the spaces are tidy, organized, and conducive to a stimulating and enjoyable experience for the students.
    • Active Participation: Keeping up with the energy and enthusiasm of the students, actively engaging in learning, while fostering a joyful atmosphere.
    • Supporting your Team: New Horizon Center supports each other in all capacitates and daily duties. You will be a team player in both your classroom and throughout the building.
     

    Duties

     
    • Educate students with developmental disabilities through tailored instructional methods that meet their unique learning needs.
    • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff to ensure a collaborative approach to education.
    • Implement multi-learning principles where applicable to enhance student engagement and independence.
    • Mentor students to promote personal growth, self-advocacy, and social skills development.
    • Manage classroom behavior through positive reinforcement techniques and effective behavior management strategies.
    • Develop and adapt curriculum materials that align with IEP goals, focusing on literacy education and other core subjects.
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to assess student progress and adjust educational approaches as necessary.
    • Maintain accurate records of student performance, behavior, and progress towards IEP objectives.
     

    Skills

     
    • Strong ability to educate diverse learners in a supportive environment.
    • Excellent communication skills for interacting with students, parents, and colleagues.
    • Experience in mentoring students, particularly those with special needs.
    • Proficient in behavior management techniques that promote positive classroom dynamics.
    • Effective classroom management skills to create a structured learning environment.
    • Experience working with individuals who have developmental, intellectual and physical disabilities is highly desirable.
    • Knowledge of literacy education practices and curriculum development tailored for special education settings.
    • Previous experience working with students in various educational contexts is beneficial.
    Working Conditions: Non-Public Special Education Therapeutic Day School; self-contained classroom
