JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under the supervision of the Director of Transportation and the assigned Bus Driver, the Bus Assistants are to assist with overseeing and providing safe transportation for students on assigned buses. Responsibilities include:
1. Assisting with the loading and unloading of special needs students; securing seatbelts, wheelchairs and other devices; assuring students are safely fastened to their seats; utilizing wheelchair lifts as needed.
2. Monitoring student behavior; maintaining order and discipline among students; assuring student understanding of bus rules; reporting behavior issues to appropriate personnel.
3. Assisting students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.
4. Communicating effectively with all school and community stakeholders, treating all with confidentiality, fairness, dignity and respect.
5. Assisting with maintaining accurate records concerning students requiring additional follow- up actions during transportation activities.
6. Performing related duties as assigned by the school administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.
7. Obtaining CPR and First Aid Certificates as required and attending mandatory special needs and safety training as necessary.
8. Attending student/parent conferences when requested.
9. Providing communication on two-way radio when necessary as well as assisting substitute drivers as needed.
10. Maintaining confidentiality at all times.
 
REQUIREMENTS: 
• Candidates should be at least twenty-one years of age.
• Candidates must possess any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to perform assigned duties.
• Candidates must exhibit good attendance. Monitors are required to pass a pre-employment background check and physical.
• They must be able to assist with medically fragile and aggressive children.
• Candidates must be able to deal discreetly and tactfully with staff and various public including parents, students, teachers, building level and central office administrators, community patrons, and public and private agencies.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Candidates must be able to bend over on a regular basis, hook up, connect, and secure wheelchairs.
• Candidates need to be strong enough to carry and lift children in and out of their car seats weighing 50 to 75 pounds.
• Candidates must be able to climb up and down stairs and be able to exit the bus from a height of 3 to 4 feet in case of an emergency.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Mechanic - Vehicle Technician Specialist is under the supervision of the Director of Transportation and reports directly to the Supervisors of the Bus Garage. Areas of responsibility include:
1. Repairing and maintaining all township vehicles including buses, cars, trucks, and vans.
2. Diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, fuel, and air systems problems.
3. Performing emergency road service including weekend and evening service calls.
4. Removing and replacing interior seat upholstery.
5. Removing, repairing, and replacing engines, transmissions, and tires.
6. Performing preventive maintenance as scheduled.
7. Cleaning of shop area, equipment, spare buses, tool boxes and tools.
8. Removing, repairing, and replacing heating and A/C systems.
9. Maintaining proper license and certification in order to serve as a substitute bus driver as needed.
10. Make road calls and emergency repairs when vehicles become disabled, regardless of weather conditions.
12. Assist with preparations for annual state bus inspections.
13. Participate in staff meetings and professional growth opportunities as directed.
14. Other duties as assigned by supervisors.
 
REQUIREMENTS:
• Qualified candidates must obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License within six months of start date and maintain thereafter. CDL certification is for the purpose of operating buses, but not transporting students/driving routes.
• Meet all prerequisite and ongoing qualifications to be covered by the corporation’s insurance carrier.
• Knowledge of gas and diesel engines, as well as other related systems, required.
• Ability to use repair manuals and parts catalogs is a necessity.
• Experience with Caterpillar and Cummins engines, computer diagnosis, and air brakes required.
• Must be willing to learn new systems and to work overtime as needed
• Keeps current with local, state, and federal school bus safety and environmental regulations.
• Candidates must be able to lift heavy objects, work in awkward and cramped positions, and make emergency repairs outside regardless of weather conditions
• Must have good communication and public relations skills with various publics including students, administrators, co-workers, and other members of the staff

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the Director of Transportation and Associate Director of Transportation, the Field Trip Bus Driver is responsible for performing the following duties:
1. Must have CDL B permit and/or willing to receive CDL training and have updated physical and yellow card.
2. Must have acceptable BMV record with no more than 2 points on license.
3. Safely transport students, teachers and others on school field or activity trips at designated locations and stay with bus until field trip is complete.
4. Must be willing to work Monday – Friday from 4pm until end of trip and some weekends, as needed. Must report to Transportation Building first during weekday trips.
5. Must be able to attend mandatory monthly meetings with Transportation Leadership and make up meetings as necessary.
6. Must be flexible and willing to accept trips that are available and have not been awarded to PM drivers.
7. Must use professional and proper radio etiquette during two-way radio operation.
8. Inspect the assigned school bus on a daily basis prior to transporting of passengers to ensure that the school bus is in good, clean and safe working order.
9. Clean and refuel the school bus as needed.
10. Ensure that a communication device is in proper working order before each trip.
11. Report all mechanical deficiencies, traffic violations, or accidents, promptly.
12. Arrange for and ensure completion of routine maintenance of the school bus (e.g., oil change); transport the school bus to and from maintenance and/or repair facilities.
13. Maintain order and discipline in an effective and courteous manner among students being transported in accordance with district policies and procedures; report any incidents involving student discipline.
14. Observe and track route timing, such as total time en-route, time between stops, loading and unloading times or any other requested information for the purpose of establishing route efficiency, as requested.
15. Maintain and submit records and reports as required.
16. Follow procedures to ensure that no child is left alone on the school bus without adult supervision at any time, and that all children have departed the school bus at the end of all bus routes (morning, evening and during field trips or other special trips).
17. Inventory bus emergency and first aid supplies and equipment; reports needs to the garage staff.
18. Prepare assistants and children for bus drills and ensure that school bus evacuation drills are held as required.

$1,000 SIGN ON BONUS
Any new full-time bus driver who possesses the necessary state licenses and qualifications to operate a school bus in Indiana at the time of their hire will be eligible for a $1,000 bonus during their first year of employment in the Washington Township Transportation Department.
