PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To be responsible for the development and direction of the library program in his/her respective school
Supervise and manage the school library/media center. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems. Serve as teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure that library/media center is involved in instructional programs of the school.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification: - Bachelor’s degree or higher
- Valid Texas Librarian or Texas Learning Resources Specialist certificate or endorsement
Special Knowledge/Skills: - Knowledge of library science
- Ability to instruct and manage student behavior
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience: - A minimum of three years successful teaching experience
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: - Maintains a current, balanced collection that supports a diverse curriculum and reflects up-to-date information and meets student needs.
- Provides a balance of print, multimedia and electronic resources based on library state standards and district adopted, board approved selection policies.
- Effectively plans school library program to meet identified needs.
- Assists in preparations of bibliographies and curriculum guides.
- Manages acquisitions, processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of resources.
- Coordinates development and maintenance of community resource file.
- Maintains schedules for instructional television programs and encourage use of video programs for educational purposes.
- Uses appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
- Compiles, budgets and costs estimates based on documented program needs.
- Compiles, maintains, and files all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
- Complies with federal and state laws, State Board of Education Rule, and board policy in the library/media services area.
- Prepares, maintains and submits reports that detail circulation statistics, library use and inventory according to district policy.
- Effectively and efficiently manages time, materials and personnel.
- Offer flexible, open access to library resources at the point of need during and beyond the instructional day.
- Maintains library file server to insure that library database files are preserved via daily backups.
- Facilitates the distribution of LRC equipment/materials and interlibrary loan.
- Actively weeds dated materials and evaluates worn materials for repair/replacement.
- Provides access to resources via the worldwide web.
- Maintains a clean, neat and businesslike, yet warm and friendly atmosphere that encourages the use of the library and its resources.
- Aligns instruction to include appropriate TEKS/STAAR objectives to support student achievement.
- Selects instructional materials that are correlated to appropriate TEKS/STAAR objectives.
- Collaborates with teachers to provide resources and instruction for specific research units created to address TESK/STAAR objectives.
- Collaborates with colleagues to adopt and modifies instruction and resources for students with special needs.
- Maintains library skills checklist to insure students have been introduced, mastered and reviewed foundation skills essential to the use and integration of library resources.
- Uses instructional strategies that include motivational techniques to actively engage students in the learning process.
- Uses appropriate questioning and inquiry techniques to challenge students.
- Provides instruction in the use of print and electronic reference tools and research techniques.
- Conducts library orientation with students and staff.
- Promotes the importance and value of information literacy as it relates to curriculum and real life.
- Provides relevant, meaningful learner centered instruction using multiple resources.
- Promotes critical thinking and applies an information problem-solving process to curriculum-related learning objectives.
- Encourages the production of appropriate products to include multimedia presentations.
- Works with individuals and/or small groups at point of need.
- Encourages students to be active lifelong readers through reading motivation activities, exhibits and/or displays, interest centers and reading incentive programs.
- Establishes a positive environment that promotes and encourages self-discipline and self-directed learning.
- Specifies expectations for desired behavior and interacts with students in an equitable manner.
- Reinforces desired behavior and redirects and intervenes when behavior is inappropriate or disruptive.
- Promotes responsible student use of information technology in the library.
- Maintains communications with campus teachers, campus administrators, other campus librarians, DLRC staff and other professionals.
- Uses appropriate and accurate written, verbal, and non-verbal communication with parents, staff, community and students.
- Be courteous, respectful and encouraging to students, staff and community.
- Maintains a positive, high-profile image for the library.
- Informs faculty and students of special services and new additions to the collection that are available.
- Engages in professional development opportunities that are aligned with personal, campus and district goals.
- Actively participates in professional organizations and growth activities.
- Actively participates in and support campus activities.
- Applies new techniques learned in workshops, courses and professional conferences.
- Adheres to MCISD school board policies and guidelines.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the most recent instructional technology.
- Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
- Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned.
