The Opportunity
The Town of Mansfield (

) is hiring a full-time Youth Services Librarian at the main location of the Mansfield Public Library. The Youth Services Librarian will be responsible for the daily operations of the youth services department in collaboration with their supervisor. They will play a vital part in fostering a love for reading and learning among children, tweens, and teens, creating engaging programs, and maintaining an inviting atmosphere in our library. They will develop and implement programs and events, both in the library and at outreach events, for children, teens and families. This position will also help with managing collections and collaborating with educators and families to enhance literacy and information skills among young patrons.
Sample Youth Services Librarian duties include:
Assisting in the planning and implementation of age-appropriate programs for youth of all ages to promote overall literacy and awareness of the Library’s collections and services;
Assisting in the promotion of Youth Services programs, preparing flyers, brochures and press releases and information for online promotions;
Assisting in collection development activities as assigned;
Directing the work of volunteers in the children’s and teen areas as necessary, and assists in planning tasks;
Filling in for other librarians when necessary, including reference and readers advisory to patrons using the adult collections;
Participating in outreach programming to area preschools, schools and other organizations;
Providing reference service to patrons of all ages and readers’ advisory to patrons using youth collections;
Providing welcoming customer service to all library patrons and positively reflects Mansfield Library’s mission, vision and values to staff and public;
Performs related duties as required.
About Us
The Mansfield Library provides guidance and access to the materials and information which enhance and enrich the lives of people of all ages. The Library’s main branch is at 54 Warrenville Road, with two smaller branches in Mansfield as well. Additionally, the Library regularly does outreach in the community. Mansfield’s Information Technology Department collaborates with the Library to support patron technology access at the Library’s three locations, as well as online access to resources from community locations and from home.
Mansfield, with a population of approximately 26,000, is located in the Northeastern portion of the state, better known as Connecticut’s Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor. Home to the University of Connecticut, Mansfield offers the unique blend of urban (Downtown Storrs -

), suburban, and rural living in a university setting. Mansfield has a variety of cultural and educational offerings, as well as an abundance of natural resources ideal for activities such as hiking, cycling, and kayaking. Mansfield is a Council-Manager form of government, with the Town Manager serving as the Chief Executive Officer responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Town.
Total Compensation
The salary range is $69,005.79 -$89,687.43. The hiring rate of pay will depend upon the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. This position is full-time with benefits. The Town of Mansfield provides an extremely competitive benefits package. Mansfield participates in the Connecticut Municipal Retirement System (CMERS), a defined pension plan, a variety of other benefits such as medical, vision, dental, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, tuition assistance, paid vacation and holidays.
Work Schedule & Location
The selected candidate will be scheduled for 35 hours per week, with a four day work week. The selected candidate will normally work four consecutive days, Monday-Thursdays (on the weeks in which their Saturday rotation falls, another weekday off will be given.) The work location is the Mansfield Public Library, 54 Warrenville Road, Mansfield Center, CT 06250.
This position requires a varied work schedule including evenings and Saturdays.
Education and Experience
Graduation from an ALA accredited university with a Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science and any other experience and training working in a public library setting or other public service setting that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above. Incumbents in this class are required to work a varied schedule with a rotation of evenings and Saturdays. Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.
