CERTIFIED SCHOOL NURSE

REPORTS TO:          Superintendent/Building Principal
 
QUALIFICATIONS:    Bachelor of Science in Nursing
                                    New Jersey School Nurse Certificate
                                    New Jersey Registered Nurse Certificate
                                    Current Provider’s Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated
                                    External Defibrillator (AED) Certification 
JOB GOALS:
1. To identify problems and needs of pupils and staff.
2. To assist pupils in becoming increasingly responsible for their own health.
3. To promote the optimal level of health for pupils.
4. To promote environmental safety and health within the school and during school related activities.
5. To provide direct health services in an efficient and cost effective manner.
6. To maintain a liaison with parents and primary healthcare providers.
 
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Carry out written orders of the medical home and standing orders of the school physician;
2. Conduct health screenings pursuant to current N.J.A.C. and monitor vital signs and general health status for emergent issues for pupils suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and controlled dangerous substances pursuant to current N.J.S.A;;
3. Maintain pupil health records, pursuant to current N.J.S.A;
4. Recommend to the school Principal those pupils who shall not be admitted to or retained in the school building based on a parent’s failure to provide evidence of the child’s immunization according to the schedules specified in current N.J.A.C;
5. Annually review pupil immunization records to confirm with the medical home that the medical condition for the exemption from immunization continues to be applicable, pursuant to current N.J.A.C;
6. Recommend to the school Principal exclusion of pupils who show evidence of communicable disease, pursuant to current N.J.S.A;
7. Direct and supervise the emergency administration of epinephrine and training school staff designated to serve as delegates, pursuant to current N.J.S.A;
8. Administer asthma medication through use of a nebulizer;
9. Maintain Free and Reduced Price lunch records;
10. Direct and supervise the health services activities of any school staff to whom the certified school nurse has delegated a nursing task:
11. Provide classroom instruction in areas related to health pursuant to current N.J.A.C;
12. Review and summarize available health and medical information regarding the pupil and transmit a summary of relevant health and medical information to the Child Study Team for the meeting pursuant to current N.J.A.C;
13. Write and update, at last annually, the individualized healthcare plan and the individualized emergency healthcare plan for pupils’ medical needs and instructing staff, as appropriate;
14. Write and update, as least annually, any written healthcare provisions required under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, 29 U.S.C.§ 794(a), for any pupil who requires them;
15. Implement and assist in the development of healthcare procedures for pupils in the event of an emergency;
16. Instruct teachers on communicable disease and other health concerns, pursuant to current N.J.S.A;
17. Maintain student attendance;
18. Maintain confidentiality:
19. Provide other nursing services consistent with the nurse’s educational services certification endorsement as a school nurse issued by the State Board of Examiners and current license approved by the State Board of Nursing.
 
Terms of Employment: _     10 month work year to be established by the Board of Education.
 
Evaluation:                            Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education Policy on evaluation of certificated staff.
