Boys Head Wrestling Coach Job Description
REPORTS TO: The athletic director, county athletic director, the principal and the director of wrestling.
SUPERVISES: In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director, county athletic director and respective principal.
JOB GOAL: In addition to teaching, the Head Coach must instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self discipline, self confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc. In order to be an effective coach and role model, our coaches must also be thoroughly knowledgeable in their sport, capable of detailed preparation, able to motivate athletes, able to make adjustments during competition, and work effectively under the authority of the athletic director and school administration. The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire system. Public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health.
The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended time, risk injury factor and due process predicaments.
It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.
Gilmer County Schools will uphold the Code of Ethics adopted by the Professional Standards Commission as accepted and approved by the State Board of Education and the Georgia High School Association.
One of the primary objectives of educational athletics is good sportsmanship. The National Federation of State High School Associations has adopted guidelines for sportsmanship. High school students, parents, and coaches should set a good example concerning sportsmanship and quickly condemn unsportsmanlike conduct by others.
SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport.
Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and, at the same time, must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
Must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
Has the ability to organize parent support groups (booster club) to help facilitate a “total” program.
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask
Has the capacity to initiate and nurture relationships with stakeholder and community members.
Has excellent verbal and written communication skills and Interpersonal skills and sound judgment when communicating with stakeholders
Should demonstrate a high level of energy and a good sense of humor with the capacity for extraordinary time and effort demands
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Wrestling
Has a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Gilmer County Schools' Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation by the entire staff of the Wrestling program.
Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements the same consistently and interprets them for staff.
Understands the proper administrative chain of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels.
Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance, including PLCs.
Coordinates their entire coaching staff (High School and Middle School) to include communication of philosophy of coaching, schemes, fundamentals and the organization of practices/workouts (i.e. written practice schedules and practice plans).
Communicates and implements the vision of the Boys Head Wrestling program to all stakeholders (players, parents, and the entire community (school and otherwise to include our Gilmer Recreation Department)
The ability to work as part of a team and the ability to work collegially and collaboratively while maintaining confidentiality.
Has the ability to Interact with the public, visitors, service vendors, and community
Scheduling of all games/matches at all levels, scheduling of in season and out of season workouts/conditioning for MS/JV/V to include officials and transportation.
