DESCRIPTION:
The
School Counselor
will provide a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal development for students attending Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD). The School Counselor will consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources regarding student needs and opportunities. The School Counselor will promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by providing information and resources, creating an atmosphere of student belonging, and providing opportunities for student leadership. The School Counselor will supplement the work of the School Social Worker and the Transition Coordinator while supporting student needs and the needs of the building administrator.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Provide high quality support that aligns with MSD’s educational mission and vision.
Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to meet student needs and to benefit students socially and academically.
Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion and provide opportunities for student leadership.
Provide responsive services designed to meet students’ immediate needs and concerns, including but not limited to counseling in individual or small-group settings or crisis response.
Participate as a member of the crisis prevention and intervention team and case management teams.
Observe and evaluate student performance, classroom behavior, social development, and physical health, when needed.
Oversee the graduation process, review student progress, and meet with students and parents, as needed.
Support the principal in the creation of student schedules and ensure transcripts are up to date.
Monitor student attendance and work with families and outside agencies, as needed.
Work with students to create and maintain Educational Development Plan and collaborate with the Transition Coordinator to ensure transition planning is aligned with Educational Development Plans.
Assist with discipline issues when the Principal is out of the building.
Collaborate with the School Social Worker to research and provide special services programs, classes, or presentations by outside presenters to students and parents i.e., alcohol and drug prevention, anti-bullying, parenting in a digital world, etc.
Participate in all staff professional development and any other professional development opportunities needed to enhance the school counseling program.
Model self-discipline and ethical behavior and present self in a professional manner through appropriate dress, communication techniques and demeanor.
Perform other related duties as assigned by Principal or designee.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree required.
Possess either a Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Guidance Counselor (NT) Endorsement
OR
a School Guidance Counselor License issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE)
Trained in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or other crisis intervention approach(es).
Possess exceptional organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills, and a strong desire to promote student success.
Demonstrate a strong commitment to equity, social justice, and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities.
Demonstrate mental/physical ability and stamina for meeting the requirements of the position.
Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties, including lifting fifty (50) pounds on an occasional basis and in excess of fifty (50) pounds with assistance.
Be self-directed and take initiative to meet the diverse demands of the position.
Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and others using American Sign Language and written English.
Experience with Naviance preferred.
Knowledge of agencies providing mental health resources, services, and/or supports for students who are Deaf and hard of hearing and their families.
One (1) year of successful experience in a Michigan school district or County Schools Office.
Skill in preparing and maintaining reports and records.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
:
Michigan School for the Deaf is a bilingual, bicultural school operated by the Michigan Department of Education. All students enrolled are Deaf and hard of hearing. The primary mode of communication is American sign language with written communication in English.
Work is performed in an office, school or community environment and involves continuous contact with staff, representatives of resident school districts, outside agencies, and members of the public.
