Job Title: 8^th Grade Science Teacher
Reports To:  Science Instructional Leader and Building Principal
Location:  Joseph Melillo Middle School
Education: CT Teaching Certificate; General Science 7-12 (034);
 
This position is full-time.  The salary and benefits associated with this position are outlined in the current East Haven Education Association contract.
 
Responsibilities:  
• Create a classroom environment that supports students’ development of science content knowledge, conceptual understandings, and related skills, knowledge and successful experience
• Implement research-based instructional practices.
• Use a variety of assessment tools, analyze student data form assessments, and use that data to drive instruction.
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, support staff, and administrators.
• Think flexibly and adapt to the specific instructional needs of students.
• Collect data to measure impact on instruction and student achievement
• Develop goals related to teacher practice, student growth, and school improvement.
• Develop and revise curriculum and various types of assessments to align with district initiatives.
 
Minimum Qualifications/Skills:
The successful candidate must have in-depth knowledge of:
• Developing students’ understanding of Science concepts and skills;
• Developing lessons that are aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards;
• Integrating technology and digital resources into instruction;
• Strong classroom management and organizational skills;
• Differentiation of instruction for diverse learners;
• Content area literacy;
• Effective assessment practices (summative and formative)
• Restorative practice
 
Evaluation: performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of certified staff.

Responsibilities:  Building substitutes instructional coverage for staff absences.  Building substitutes will be assigned to a particular school for the entire school year. 

 
• A Bachelors Degree is required, CT certification is preferred.
Per CT State guidelines, if you do not have a Bachelor's degree then a waiver can be submitted if you meet the following criteria:
• At least 18 years of age
• Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
• Have had experience working with school aged children
  
 
This position is a 10 months. Qualified candidates will be paid $135.00/day for the 2024-2025 School Year.

Requirements: An Associates degree (equivalent to 60 credits at a college/university) or passing score on the ParaPro Assessment is required, Bachelors degree preferred.
Previous experience working with high risk children is desirable.
 
This position is a 10-month, 29.5 hour per week position. The hourly rates are dependent on the educational Category (see the contract for more details):  Cat I $18.21, Cat II $18.72, or Cat III $21.12 per hour.
This position has limited benefits as outlined in the current East Haven Paraprofessional and Teachers Aides contract.

Minimum Qualifications/Skills and Knowledge Requirements:
• Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by certified staff.
• Assists the certified staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
• Monitors work, corrects papers, and supervises curriculum-based testing and makeup work as assigned by the certified staff.
• Serves as the chief source of information and help to any guest teacher assigned in the absence of the regular certified staff.
• Performs clerical, classroom maintenance, and instructional duties as assigned by the certified staff.
• Alerts the certified staff to any problem or special information about an individual student.
• Performs assigned supervision of students during lunch periods, play periods and on field trips.
• Performs assigned non-instructional classroom duties, such as snack time, toileting, and clothing routines.
• When requested, serves as a resource person to the General Education Intervention Team and/or IEP/SRBI/ESL Team(s).
• Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.
• Participates in in-service training programs as approved.
• Maintains safe working environment and encourages colleagues to be safety-minded in the performance of all school-related duties.
• Performs other such duties/assignments as directed by the certified staff.
• Assists, as directed by certified staff, in the effort to successfully maintain students with special needs in an integrated setting, as determined by the IEP/SRBI/ESL Team(s).
