SUMMARY:
The Drop-In Center is dedicated to providing individual and group counseling services, crisis intervention, and referrals to community resources to students at Highland Park High School in the most caring and safe environment possible. We advocate for the mental health needs of students by offering instruction that enhances self-awareness and promotes interpersonal skill development that leads to successful reintegration into the academic setting.
District 113 Counseling Interns are members of a highly professional and invested team of student service personnel. A District 113 Counseling Intern must demonstrate a keen awareness of and sensitivity to the issues facing young people and their families and understand implications for education of students with academic, social and/or emotional challenges. To be successful in this role, Counseling Interns must be able to function as members of a team and work collaboratively with department colleagues, deans, faculty, and other support staff, as they develop working alliances with students and families.
Positions Available: 2 Clinical Mental Health Internship positions (3 days per week)

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate clinical mental health counseling program.
DROP-IN INTERNSHIP GOALS:
Cultivate a space for students to promote positive, healthy behaviors by building and practicing skills to manage discomfort, grief, or difficult transitions
Provide a well-rounded experience which prepares them to enter the field with advanced skills and competencies in the clinical, assessment, and consultation domains.
Engage in a self-directed supervision model that addresses growth in the core competency areas, as well as areas of special interest.
Learn how to work within a team problem-solving model, with an emphasis on flexibly serving student needs, while assessing the outcomes of interventions.
Assist in collecting data on student interventions to guide more effective strategies and improved outcomes.
Provide referrals to school and community resources that treat mental health issues (suicidal ideation, violence, abuse, and depression) with the intent of removing barriers to learning and helping the student return to the classroom
Advocate, collaborate, and coordinate with school and community stakeholders to ensure students have access to mental health services
Gain a thorough understanding of the challenging conditions that impact student growth and learning and the requisite skills and strategies necessary to address those challenges.
Attend professional development workshops and seminars.
