TITLE: Director of Special Education (12 month)
DEFINITION: The Director of Special Education reports directly to the Executive Director of Special Education. The person in this position oversees designated special education programs and personnel in assigned schools.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Current Illinois Professional Education License with Director of Special Education Endorsement required
Administrative Endorsement required
KEY FUNCTIONS:
Program Development, Implementation, & Evaluation
Oversees program development, implementation, and evaluation of special education programs as assigned
Leads and coordinates the implementation of the District ESY program
Monitors current trends in special education and school best practices and legal mandates
Maintains a database of special education students for assigned and projected for programs and schools
Facilitates transition planning between elementary, middle, high school
Assist with special education department budget planning and finalizes projections for IDEA/Medicaid management of funds
Instructional Leadership & Compliance Monitoring
Monitors implementation integrity of special education curriculum and progress monitoring of student goals/benchmarks
Facilitates professional development of certified and classified special education staff
Coordinates and oversees compliance and implementation of IDEA, Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and other ISBE mandates for students with disabilities
Attends special education department meetings at individual schools, as necessary
Supervision & Evaluation
Monitors class size and workloads of special education staff and related service specialists
Assists in the development of yearly staffing projections based on special education enrollment and needs
Participates in the interview process of prospective special education personnel at assigned sites/programs
Aligns special education staff FTE with student needs in each school/program
Mentor and evaluate staff, as assigned
Supervise administrative assistant
Consultation, Collaboration, and Case Coordination
Foster a positive relationship with parents, parent groups, and school support teams
Support the Problem-Solving Team process at assigned buildings
