Salary: $35.875 - $42.099/hour*
*Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for range.
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 6:30 am - 2:30 pm
NATURE OF WORK:
This is semi-skilled work performing maintenance and repair of machines and equipment used to provide pressure, maintain levels, and distribute water for human consumption and industrial use. Work may involve at times serving as lead worker on a crew maintaining and repairing machines and equipment necessary to distribute water. Employees may be assigned tasks of a similar or higher-level classification to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement. Safety equipment such as hardhat, safety glasses, reflective vest, gloves, steel-toed shoes, and other protective equipment is worn.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

- Under the direction or with the assistance of Pumping Technician, dismantles or partially dismantles electric motors, turbines, pumps, hydraulic valves, instrumentation, internal combustion engines, compressors, refrigeration equipment, high/low voltage switchgear, meters, gauges and other equipment to gain access to, or remove, faulty parts, using hand and power tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers and hoists.
- Repairs or replaces defective parts.
- Inspects machines and equipment periodically, lubricating moving parts, or replacing worn parts to prevent breakdown or malfunctioning.
- May operate plant equipment to process and distribute water.
- May perform unskilled manual tasks (e.g., grounds maintenance, painting, janitorial).
- May assist Pumping Technician in the completion of major tasks.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
Possession of a high school diploma or GED and two years of related experience in general mechanical/electrical work or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record
- Considerable knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in mechanical and electrical repairs.
- Considerable knowledge of safety standards and precautions connected with mechanical/electrical activities.
- Ability to operate test equipment and understand test readings.
- Ability to complete required reports in a clear and concise manner.
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment associated with mechanical and electrical operations.
- Ability to perform simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Ability to read and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of metal fabrication, power distribution, electrical wiring, general construction, process control, pipe fitting, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, electric motors, pumps, chemistry, microbiology and areas associated with water plant operations.
- Knowledge of safety standards and precautions connected with water plant operations and high/low voltage switchgear.
- Must be willing and able to undergo and pass annual medical surveillance to comply with OSHA respiratory requirements and remain compliant as a condition of employment.
- Must remain appropriately shaven in order to safely use a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and full or half mask respirator.
- Must pass an annual respiratory surveillance examination.
- Must be willing and able to obtain National Incident Management System ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications within 18 months of employment.
- Must be willing and able to obtain a forklift operator's certification within 18 months of employment and maintain it as a condition of employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
Ability to lift parts, climb in and out of trenches, stand or sit for extended periods of time or work in confined spaces.
Ability to detect and recognize odors; focus on small and/or distant objects.
Frequent exposure to dangerous equipment, loud noise levels, extreme temperatures, vibrations, dirty and wet conditions.
SUPERVISION:
Work is performed under the general direction of a supervisor or Pumping Technician. Work assignments are given in the form of work orders or verbal instructions, with the employee responsible for completing the work according to City work rules and safety regulations. Work is reviewed through ongoing observation, written and verbal communications, meetings, and feedback from the supervisor and from other department employees. Guidance is provided through rules and regulations, policies and procedures, Unified Work Rules, Union Contract, Personnel Rules and OSHA. Additional guidance is provided through the Illinois EPA. Work is evaluated at least annually for the safe and skilled operation of equipment, quality of tasks, adherence to work rules, and performance in accordance with classification standard.
