POSITION TITLE:
COACH - MIDDLE SCHOOL
QUALIFICATIONS: Hold a valid coaching endorsement as approved by the Iowa Department of Education.
REPORTS TO: Activities Director
CONSULTS WITH: 1. Middle School Principal
2. Head Varsity Coach
3. Activities Director
POSITION GOALS: To organize and conduct a positive athletic program for middle level students, which focus upon skill development, participation, and development of a positive attitude toward self and others.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Organizes and conducts regular practice sessions which stress development of basic fundamentals.
2. Plans for the participation of each athlete in practice and competitive events.
3. Holds a pre-season meeting to distribute to all athletes and parents rules and expectations related to conduct, attendance, and requirements for participation awards.
4. Is positive and stress the strengths of each individual student.
5. Implements and emphasizes a team concept, stressing the positive results of working together.
6. Communicates with the head varsity coach to coordinate the entire program.
7. Emphasizes the importance of good sportsmanship.
8. Stresses the importance of sound training and diet practices.
9. Supervises locker room and practice areas before, during, and after practice.
10. Is accountable for athletes at home and away games.
11. Requests equipment orders and repairs according to the timeline established by the Activities Director.
12. Maintains equipment inventory.
13. Keeps accurate records of equipment issued.
14. Properly stores equipment during the off-season.
15. Submits list of missing equipment to the Activities Director so the athlete can be properly billed.
16. Keeps accurate attendance records and enforce established attendance guidelines.
17. Sets a positive example for athletes; including bench conduct and self-control.
18. Is responsible for preparing the athletes in a manner which will lessen the chance for injury and be knowledgeable in the care of normal athletic-related injuries. Refer serious injuries to a physician and/or hospital.
19. Organizes and maintains health record cards for all athletes under the coach’s supervision and keep these records on file in a trainer’s kit at all competitive events for quick reference in the event of injury to the athlete which may require medical attention.
20. Files injury reports in the office and/or with the school nurse for insurance purposes.
21. Provides a listing of: practice locations and times, event locations and times, and bus departure times to the athlete.
22. Sees that training rule violations are reported to the principal and activities director.
23. Oversees the safety conditions of the facility and equipment in the assigned sport at times students are present.
24. Sees that locker and equipment rooms are maintained in a neat and proper manner.
25. Cooperates with the various news media in providing publicity materials about the sport and arrange for reporting results of all contests--win or lose.
