    Education and Certification:
    • High School Diploma.
    • Completion of at least two years of post secondary education (minimum 60 college credits) OR and associate's degree OR successful complete of a Paraprofessional Assessment (ParaPro) exam.
    • Must meet Delaware Department of Education requirements for paraeducators.
    • Must be able to successfully complete and maintain certification in the district approved behavioral intervention program applicable for teh setting  (e.g. Safe & Positive Approaches to Behavior)
    Preferred Experience
    • Prior experience working with elementary-aged children preferred.
    • Experience supporting diverse student populations, including English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities, is a plus.

    General Description: The Paraeducator provides one-on-one or small group instruction; assists with classroom management or individual student behavior; provides assistance in other classes throughout the school day as needed. and assists in or provides instructional services to students under the direct supervision of a teacher.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

      • Assists students, individually or in small groups, to help them master assignments and reinforce learning concepts presented by the teachers.
      • Teaches and reinforces positive behaviors and social skills to the students.
      • Assists the teachers with classroom management.
      • Supervises students in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, playgrounds, and all areas of the school environment including on field trips as needed.
      • Provides extra assistance to students with special needs.
      • Observes students’ performance and records relevant data to assess progress.
      • Ability to restrain and assist students with aggressive behavior when needed.

    1. Knowledge
      • Human behavior and performance/ individual differences in ability, personality and interests; learning and motivation.
      • Principles and methods for teaching and instructing individuals and groups
      • Relevant policies and procedures that promote a safe school environment including potential training in areas such as; Child Abuse Prevention, Suicide Prevention, Criminal Youth Gang, Teen Dating Violence, School Bullying Prevention, Delaware Homeless Education, Pyramid Training (Devereaux), First Aide/CPR/AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, Assistance with Medication, Epi Pen, DeSSA Assessment Test Security Training, SAT/PSAT.
      • District Employee School Handbook.  Board Policies such as Title IX/504 Grievance Policy, "Not in my School" Eliminating Sexual Misconduct in Schools, Acceptable Use/Signed Technology Acquisition Agreement, Drug and Alcohol Policy for Professional and Support Staff, CHSD Accounting Manual Procedures, Building Handbook, Confidentiality Issues related to Student Information, Technology Protection Measures and Internet Safety.
    2. Skills

      • Instructing – Teaching others how to do something.
      • Social perceptiveness – Being aware of others’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
      • Coordination & Flexibility – Adjusting actions in relation to others’ actions, and an openness to accepting new assignments and duties.
      • Physical - Continuous moderate effort or physical activity required. Must be able to walk, occasionally run if needed, and to restrain students if necessary.  Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
      • Communicating - Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person
    3.  Abilities
      • Interpersonal Relationships – Developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with students and staff, and maintaining them over time.
      • Oral comprehension – Able to listen and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
      • Oral expression – Able to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
