    Position Summary:

    To provide, as a member of the Counseling Department, a comprehensive guidance program for students and specifically provide support to meet the needs of the assigned caseload.  The Counselor will consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; and provide support to other educational programs.


    Essential Tasks and Responsibilities:
    • Counsel groups or individual students through the development of educational and career plans
    • Counsel small groups and individual students; refers severe concerns to appropriate community resources
    • Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students
    • Evaluate and make recommendations for the building counseling program
    • Conduct counseling activities in the classroom in conjunction with administration and teachers
    • Consult with teachers to facilitate the infusion of counseling activities into the regular education curriculum
    • Counsel/guide students and parents in use of test results for education/career planning
    • Respond to crisis situations when appropriate
    • Assist with state and district tests
    • Attend and/or facilitate informational meetings, pre-registration meetings and other programs and evening parent meetings as necessary
    • Assist in student assessments and evaluations
    • Assist with registration and scheduling of new students and conducts orientation to school procedures and the schools’ various opportunities for learning
    • Meet with each student on their assigned caseload at least one time annually
    • Aid students in course and subject selections
    • Maintain students records as applicable and protects their confidentiality
    • Work to discover and develop special abilities of students
    • Work to prevent students from dropping out of school
    • Provide student information to colleges and potential employers, according to provisions of the School Board’s policy on student records and federal guidelines
    • Make recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships
    • Make recommendations for alternative learning environments
    • Help students evaluate career interest and choices; disseminates occupational information to students
    • Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to academics, home and family, health, and emotional issues
    • Confer with parents whenever necessary and appropriate
    • Provide training on counseling topics for teachers and parents
    • Communicate regularly internally and externally to develop and maintain a positive school/community relationship
    • Collaborate with district counseling team
    • Provide support for military connected students and families
    • Coordinate class registration process, master schedule, and course selection guide
    • Assist with the registration and orientation students who are new to the school regarding procedures and educational opportunities.
    • Assist with the school district's dropout prevention efforts
    • Serve as a resource to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
    • Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research, and by maintaining professional relationships with members of institutions of higher learning and the business community.
    • Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and providing student information to prospective colleges and employers, as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
    • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
    • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the building administrator and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge of pre/post high school program eligibility requirements
    • Knowledge of special education procedures
    • Knowledge of college/university admissions processes, scholarship programs and other educational opportunities
    • Knowledge of current developments in business and industry regarding career opportunities and employment
    • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles
    • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans
    • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding the education of students
    • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed
    • Ability to communicate effectively both in oral and written form with students, parents and other stakeholders
    • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work


    Certification/License: Must have Guidance and Counseling endorsement on teaching certificate
