    PURPOSE: Under the general support and supervision of the high school principal, the Secondary health sciences teacher is responsible for providing instruction on a wide range of health related courses, including health occupations, medical terminology, First Aid/CPR, and dual enrollment courses so that students develop the skills and knowledge related to employment in health careers.   
     
    REPORTS TO:  Principal or Vice-Principal
     
    PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS This position requires the candidate to hold, or be eligible to hold a Professional Oregon Educator License. Highly qualified candidates will possess an understanding of adolescent learning and industry practices in the health field as well as health related field/work experience. Applicants must commit to upholding the tenets of the Competent and Ethical Educator as defined in OAR 584-020.         
     
    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  
    1. Teach occupational knowledge and skills in areas such as human body structure and function, microbes and disease, health team relations, patient relations, health care skills, sports medicine, safety, and career preparation. 
    2. Serve as advisor for the health occupations student leadership organization if assigned.  
    3. Organize and maintain an active health occupations advisory committee. 
    4. Coordinate the placement, supervision, and evaluation of students on internships and clinical experience sites in the community. 
    5. Match activities and materials to individual and group skills and needs. 
    6. Design and select and use planned sequences of instruction for the development of occupational skills and knowledge.  
    7. Read and stay abreast of current topics in health related fields and science.
    8. Ensure that instructional activities and materials are clearly related to District, school, program, and course goals and objectives. 
    9. Provide instruction based on designed instructional materials or develop alternate materials in prescribed District format. 
    10. Establish and maintain an orderly and supportive classroom environment in which students are actively participating and show respect for one another and for the teacher. 
    11. Utilize various curriculum resources, models and simulations.
    12. Conduct interesting and well-paced classes using a variety of instructional techniques, strategies, and materials appropriate to the lesson. 
    13. Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served.
    14. Assess, track, and provide feedback promptly and often to students on their progress and assignments.
    15. Selects and requisitions required instructional equipment, supplies, and materials.  
    16. Develop professional relationships with other agencies and programs.
    17. Ensures that materials and equipment are properly used, maintained and stored, and that inventory records are accurate and current.

    WORKING CONDITIONS: 
    The Teacher works primarily within the school building.  Although the primary work is indoors, the Teacher frequently works outdoors supervising students, in variable weather conditions including inclement weather.  Some teachers have assignments that are routinely outside, such as a Physical Education or Agriculture Teacher.  The incumbent must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time.  The incumbent will need to walk quickly at times, as well as speak and hear in often loud environments.
    The position involves a high level of interaction with students and families from multiple and diverse backgrounds many who have particular or unique needs.  The mental demands on the Teacher are considerable.  The incumbent must maintain control under stress, and must manage him/herself in the presence of emotionally challenging interactions with staff, students, and parents. 
    Planning and assessing and communicating with students and families includes frequent, prolonged, and irregular hours including evening and weekend time.
