SUMMARY: Assists the District Mechanic(s) in keeping the district's vehicles (e.g., cars, vans, busses, food service trucks, mowers) in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problem, interruptions, or safety issues to the educational program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned
- Assists in assuring adequate maintenance and repair records are maintained for District vehicles and equipment.
- Utilizes the Automated Fleet Management System.
- Assists in recommending major equipment and vehicle replacements.
- Assists in performing weekly, monthly, and annual inspections of school buses and other district vehicles.
- Assists in preparing annual State Police Bus inspection.
- Assists in preparing and auditing the preventative maintenance program for transportation and maintenance vehicles and maintaining related records and reports on vehicle maintenance operations.
- Assists in diagnosing, repairing, rebuilding, and making necessary adjustments on all vehicle systems.
- Assists in engine testing using specialized equipment.
- Assists in Inventory Management & Control; setting up and supervising receipt and issuance of parts and supplies.
- Assists in analyses requirements and making recommendations on a schedule for the preventative maintenance program for District vehicles and equipment.
- Assists in maintaining technology related equipment installed on transportation fleet
- Assists in performing road testing to determine road ability.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge and ability to repair components on all systems, including the ability to operate shop equipment.
- Assists in performing trouble shooting and related repairs on District vehicles.
- Promotes high standards of workmanship, safety, and good housekeeping methods in all areas.
- Assists in directing the work efforts of the mechanic trades personnel engaged in the maintenance and preservation of the school transportation and maintenance vehicles.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: - High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Experience as a mechanic is required.
- Experience as a first class mechanic on school buses or heavy equipment preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: - Must have a Mechanic License, a valid driver’s license, and be insurable.
- Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License with School Bus Endorsements.
- Must be able to obtain (once hired) Mechanic Licenses, through ASE or the State of Michigan, in the following areas: Heavy Duty Brakes, Heavy Duty Suspension and Steering, Heavy Duty Diesel Engines, Heavy Duty Drive Train, and Electrical.
GENERAL: - Be reliable, punctual, dependable, honest, and self-motivated
- Ability to perform work on all district vehicles.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before employees of the organization. Basic phone skills.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving vehicles and mechanical equipment. The employee may frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, gases, fumes, and sprays. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and occasionally very loud.
