Salary: T-10, $20.53 to $21.40 per hour, DOE
 
This position receives a 4% increase to the base hourly pay rate for the bilingual requirement, per the TOTEM/ASD agreement.
 
Job Summary
The role of the Special Education Paraprofessional Educator ASL/English is to provide direct instructional and support services to deaf and hard of hearing students who require a visual sign language to access instructional information. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).
 
Job Requirements
The following are required:
1. A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
2. Must meet paraprofessional requirements for the state of Alaska through one of the following methods: 48 college semester credits from a regionally accredited institution, OR a passing score of 459 or greater on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment exam, OR passing the WorkKeys by ACT assessment, OR passing the ASD provided Master Teacher paraprofessional training.
3. Within three years of employment must meet the standard of an Intermediate+ rating on the Sign Communication Proficiency interview.
4. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
5. Ability to maintain confidentiality and inspire confidence and cooperation of staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
6. Ability to establish and maintain a professional relationship with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
 
The following are preferred:
1. Fluency in American Sign Language and English.
2. Ability to use American Sign Language to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing children and staff members.
3. An associate’s degree or higher; or have met a rigorous standard of quality demonstrated through a formal state or local academic assessment.
4. Intermediate SLPI score within the past three years.
5. Knowledge of first aid.
6. Knowledge of how deaf and hard of hearing children relate to their educational environment, and how to meet their visual and auditory communication needs.
7. Knowledge of technology relevant to the education of deaf and hard of hearing students.
8. Knowledge of deaf culture and how it can affect education of deaf and hard of hearing children.
9. Ability to use office equipment such as computers, educational software, photocopiers, video cameras/projectors, videophones, and telephone relay services.
10. Ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing, and mathematics.
11. Ability to use interpreting services for in-service training and meetings if needed.
12. Familiarity with the deaf community and resources available for the education of deaf and hard of hearing children.
 
Essential Job Functions
1. Provides instructional services to students either individually or in small groups under the direct supervision of a teacher using materials and tools designated by the teacher.
2. Assists in physical care tasks and health-related activities as appropriate.
3. Assists students with behavioral/management needs.
4. Assists with data collection and other tasks related to documenting student progress in learning and goal attainment.
5. Assists with classroom management, such as organizing instructional materials, supervising students on field trips, during lunch/recess/to and from buses, and in learning activities outside of their regular classroom.
6. Assists in the technical preparation and production of media programs.
7. Assists all staff and students by facilitating communication in any educational setting that the deaf and hard of hearing students attend.
8. Provides the teaching staff with information about the students that will assist the teacher with the development of appropriate learning and behavioral experiences.
9. Assists in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics; or reading readiness, writing readiness, and math readiness when working with early childhood.
10. Uses interpreting services for in-service training and meetings.
 
Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Job Summary
The Educational Interpreter interprets and transliterates between deaf students and English speaking non-signers in school-related environments. The interpreter provides other supports to the learning environment such as directing attention and identifying environmental sounds. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).
 
Job Requirements
The following are required:
1. A high school diploma or equivalent.
2. Must acquire an EIPA 4.0 or above and the passage of the knowledge Written Test within three years of hire.
3. Must be knowledgeable regarding American Deaf culture and sensitive to multicultural environmental conditions.
4. Must be fluent in American Sign Language and spoken/written English, including academic English.
5. Must have the ability to effectively and accurately comprehend, interpret, and transliterate ASL to English and vice versa among students, staff, parents, administrators, and the public. 
 
The following are preferred:
1. An associate’s degree in American Sign Language Interpreting from an accredited college or University.
2. Must be working toward RID certification or equivalent.
3. Completion of an educational interpreter training program, or documented proof of ongoing participation in interpreter training activities.
4. Minimum of two years of paid interpreting work.
5. Possession and maintenance of an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment rating of 3.5.
6. Receipt of a passing score on the Educational Interpreter Knowledge Assessment (EIPA-WT).
 
Essential Job Functions
1. Interprets and transliterates between Deaf & Hard of Hearing students and English speaking non-signers in the classroom, and in other settings to include activities both on campus, the community, and school related extracurricular activities.
2. Interprets and transliterates between deaf staff and English speaking non-signers for school related purposes, when not assigned to students.
3. Adapts signing level to communication needs of the students.
4. Ensures appropriate logistics such as lighting and seating are implemented for effective interpreting.
5. Prepares for content and message delivery of instructional materials.
6. Provides clear and appropriate information for substitute interpreters.
7. Functions as a member of the educational team, at times participating in Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings.
8. Attends interpreter training and skill building sessions annually.
9. Interacts with the public as a representative of AKSD.
10. Demonstrates in work activities and interactions knowledge of the role, duties, and functions of an educational interpreter.
11. Works with students ages 3 to 21 with a variety of disabilities and in a variety of educational settings.
12. Works as an effective educational team member.
13. Abides by the Anchorage School District protocol and to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
14. Maintains professional boundaries as noted in the Alaska Educational Interpreter Handbook.
