Job Summary
The Elementary School Secretary assists the elementary administrative assistant in providing clerical and administrative support in an elementary school. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).
 
Job Requirements
The following are required:
1. A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
2. One year of clerical experience. Equivalent education may be considered in lieu of related work experience.
3. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
4. Ability to maintain confidentiality and inspire confidence and cooperation of staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
5. Ability to establish and maintain a professional relationship with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
 
The following are preferred:
1. Knowledge of first aid.
2. Ability to operate common office equipment and be proficient in computer use, both Macintosh and Windows, with experience in a variety of programs and applications.
3. Ability to type accurately at an acceptable rate of speed.
4. Knowledge of ASD computer systems such as Q, EmpCenter, Business Plus, or Absence Management.
5. Knowledge of office practices and procedures.
6. Ability to maintain clerical records and prepare reports and perform clerical work with speed, accuracy, and follow through.
7. Ability to learn, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, laws, and processes.
8. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
 
Essential Job Functions
1. Performs a wide variety of clerical and typing work related to the assigned function.
2. Compiles information from various sources and types a variety of forms, letters, reports, bulletins, charts, curriculum guides, handbooks, questionnaires, requisitions, contracts, and other materials from rough drafts, marginal notes, or verbal instructions.
3. Proofreads and edits documents for accuracy, completion, and conformance to established procedures.
4. Compiles and tabulates statistical data.
5. Develops and maintains files and records.
6. Assists the general public regarding specific program questions.
7. Serves as an information source to students, teachers, parents, and the general public.
8. Works with the student information system.
9. Assists in enrolling new students and perform activities related to registration and attendance.
10. Assists with inventory and ordering of supplies.
 
Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Job Summary
School librarians instill a love of learning in all students, ensuring that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information and have equitable access to information. Librarians empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information, and collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to design and implement lessons and units of instruction, and assess student learning and instructional effectiveness. The school librarian provides the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library program is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and the school district, and is an integral component of the learning/instructional program. The position reports to and is evaluated by the site principal.
 
This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. This position’s grade level, content area taught, and work site may change dependent upon student enrollment and district staffing needs. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

1. A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate with an endorsement in library science, media services, or school librarian.
