Middle Level Science Teacher
The Science Teacher will provide high-quality, standards-based science instruction to middle school students, fostering curiosity and critical thinking. The teacher will be responsible for developing and delivering engaging lessons aligned with the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for Science. The ideal candidate will cultivate a positive classroom culture that supports inquiry-based learning, collaboration, and academic achievement.
Position Purpose : Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop skills and competence in the field of science; develop student's skills and abilities in scientific methods and problem-solving, as well as an understanding of the application of science in the solution of practical problems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for subject area, and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
- Plan, prepare, and deliver daily lessons that are inquiry based that meet the academic needs of all learners and align with South Carolina Science Standards.
- Integrate hands-on activities, labs, and technology to support content mastery in areas such as life science to build foundational understanding and prepare students for high school biology.
- Designs learning activities to demonstrate the application of science to everyday existence, including scientific research projects, demonstrations, experiments, and laboratory activities.
- Instructs students in the proper use and care of scientific equipment, chemicals, and plant and animal life.
- Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment, maintains inventory records, and ensures equipment is in good working order.
- Use data to differentiate instruction and assess student progress through formative and summative assessments.
- Use data to modify instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conduct individual and small group instruction as needed.
- Create a safe classroom environment conducive to all learning and appropriate to meet the needs and interests of students.
- Maintain accurate student records, including grades, attendance, and behavior documentation.
- Maintain a system for reporting all student activities and achievements.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Collaborate with grade-level and content-area teams to develop interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
- Participate in faculty meetings and other professional or student led committees when applicable.
- Participate in professional development, school functions, and staff meetings.
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learning of current developments in the education field.
- Implement classroom management strategies that align with school-wide expectations.
- Adhere to all district policies and procedures and comply with applicable state and federal laws.
- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
Additional Duties
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment
- Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Travel Requirements
- Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of a wide range of science subject areas, including general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, physics, and other related areas (e.g., mathematics).
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- School-based environment with occasional evening and weekend commitments.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds for classroom materials and lab supplies.
- Requires standing for extended periods and supervising students in various settings.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Science Education or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Valid South Carolina teaching certificate in Middle Level Science (Grades 6–8) or Secondary Science with appropriate endorsement.
Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience teaching in a middle school setting.
- Strong content knowledge of middle school science curriculum and instructional best practices.
- Effective classroom management and communication skills.
- Commitment to continuous professional growth and collaboration.
- Familiarity with inquiry-based learning and the 5E Instructional Model.
- Experience using educational technology and digital platforms for instruction and assessment.
Salary: Based on the South Carolina state teacher salary schedule and district supplements, commensurate with education and experience.
