Substitute teachers perform the instructional and classroom management processes for teachers and/or paraprofessionals who are absent for a day or longer periods of time. Their duties include following the provided lesson plans, taking attendance, explaining classwork, and manging the classroom. Candidates need to be flexible in their availability.
The Towns County School System employs substitute teachers to fill in for teachers and paraprofessionals who are absent. Substitute teachers are utilized on an as needed basis and must have scheduling flexibility. Applications for substitute teachers are reviewed for hiring in July, August and December. Additional reviews may be necessary if there is a need for additional substitutes at other points in the year. The application remains open all year. Substitute candidates who do not currently hold a valid Georgia teaching certificate, valid Georgia paraprofessional license, or valid out of state teaching certificate are required to take the substitute teacher course through Pioneer RESA. Registration for this course can be found by visiting their online course catalog and searching “Substitute Teacher Training” (https://fcweb.pioneerresa.org/course/catalog) The cost of this course is $50. The school system will reimburse substitutes for this fee after being hired if a valid receipt is provided to the Personnel Director.
