Overview: The Pathway to Teaching Excellence (PTE) Program addresses the shortage of certified teachers within the school district while providing career advancement opportunities for dedicated and motivated persons interested in teaching. This program aims to support prospects in pursuing a college degree and/or certification by offering financial assistance and mentorship, enabling them to become fully certified teachers within four years.

Qualification:  Approved by Assistant Superintendent for Personnel to be employed as a paraprofessional or teacher through a District of Innovation contract. ESL and Special Education are excluded from positions under this program.
Have been selected by the building principal to be a paraprofessional or teach a designated grade or subject. No prior college hours are required. 

The Intern program is for educators employed with DISD as a paraprofessional or permanent substitute for at least two years. Acceptance into the pathway is through an application process. Upon acceptance, pathway participants can apply for available teacher-intern positions within the district. After obtaining a teacher-intern position, tuition cost (up to $6,000 annually) will be paid for by DISD. Participants will furnish a current transcript indicating course completion at the end of the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Support is provided at all stages in the program. A program advisor serves as a liaison between all stakeholders, and an instructional coach is assigned to each participant to provide job-embedded professional development and support. Participants who complete all components of the program will obtain Texas teacher certification and have a strong foundation for a career in education.

Application Process: The application window opens once per year in the spring (the first year of implementation will be different), and notification of acceptance is provided before the school year’s conclusion. Individuals must have worked with DISD for at least two years to be eligible to apply.  The application will be submitted electronically and is comprised of the following components: 1. Resume (to include the current number of college credits) 2. Written Philosophy of Education 3. Recommendations (1 from campus administrator, one from DISD employee). Applicants not accepted into the pathway can apply at the next application window the following spring. A teacher intern will be hired under a District of Innovation contract. Continued employment in the role is contingent upon satisfactory performance. To evaluate interns, campus principals will utilize the T-TESS rubric, calendar, and processes.

Academic Probation: Failure to maintain semester course completion schedules for one semester will place the individual on academic probation. Failure to maintain semester course completion a 2nd time will require removal from the the teacher intern position.

Obtaining a Teacher-Intern position: The participant is responsible for obtaining a teacher-intern position. To support participants in this process, a database will be created to serve as a directory of participants who are available for hire.

Professional Learning: Participants operating in a teacher-intern role must complete all district-required trainings for each school year.
