    Reports to: Assistant Principal or designee
     
    Position summary: In the absence of the full-time classroom teacher, the substitute teacher delivers instruction, manages the learning environment, and monitors students.
     
    Role qualifications:
    • Must hold a valid Illinois Substitute Teaching License (SUB), Professional Educator License (PEL), or an Educator License with Stipulations (ELS).
    • Must hold a bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
    • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

    Position responsibilities:
    • Executes the full-time teacher’s lesson plans.
    • Collaborates with the Assistant Principal to create lesson plans on long-term assignments.
    • Develops lessons and activities that support a positive, nurturing and enriching learning environment.
    • Exhibits a positive mindset toward student learning, teaching practice, and professional development.
    • Facilitates problem-solving in the classroom.
    • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
    • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
    • Adheres to school processes and protocols.
    • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and communicates these goals and objectives to students and parents.
    • Prepares for classes assigned and shows evidence of preparation upon request of the administration.
    • Utilizes best practices with an emphasis on student engagement and cooperative learning techniques to enhance instruction.
    • Provides instruction that supports the District's philosophy of education.
    • Initiates contact with parents when necessary and responds promptly, constructively and professionally to parent-initiated contact/concerns.
    • Performs other related duties as requested by building administration.
     
    Essential skills and experience:
    • Must possess the desire and ability to work with a diverse staff and student body.
    • Must possess knowledge of instructional methods appropriate for students at the secondary level.
    • Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet deadlines; manage small and large groups of students; and communicate effectively with students, including on potentially sensitive topics.
    • Ability to establish and maintain classroom behavior expectations based on clearly defined principles.
    • Ability to maintain a professional decorum when dealing with behavioral problems.
    • Working familiarity with computers, assistive technologies; internet and email systems; and word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software.
    • Working knowledge of various office and classroom equipment.

    Valued but not required skills and experience:
    • Experience working in a high school setting preferred;
    • Bilingual (English-Spanish) preferred.

    • Physical demands: While performing duties of job, employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
    • Work environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    Terms of Employment:
    • Salary is $225 per day for Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) holders and Educator License with Stipulations (ELS) holders
    • Salary is $175 per day for Illinois Substitute License (SUB) holders after substitute teaching for 20 days
    • Salary is $140 per day for Illinois Substitute License (SUB) holders for the first 20 days of substitute teaching
